The “solution” to all Dilemmas
Last Thursday I co-led a class on the topic of “Nobility and Dilemma”.
I’ve used this approach for years, and I hope it is useful to others.
Here is what we offered:
We define Nobility as Assuming responsibility for uncomfortable trade-offs.
The practice was:
1. Discover the main facets of the dilemma as overlapping but distinct fields of care. For example: I care about spending time with my family. I care about changing the world with my work. I care about my health.
2. Feeling each distinct field of care fully as a sensory experience.
3. Finding integrity by metabolizing the dilemma: consider the dilemma, then sit in and experiencing the sensory basis for all the overlapping but distinct fields of care simultaneously.
4. The sensation of dilemma now illuminates the dilemma, instead of dictating it
I would like to thank my co-leaders for the session, Max Soweski and Derek Van Ittersum
