The Five Sexes, Revisited’ Revisited
Eight courses, seven of them in the College of Arts and Sciences, were conditionally accepted but “mitigated” to comply with system policy. Two, “Sociology of Gender” and“Contemporary Sociological Theory,” are being taught by Chaitanya Lakkimsetti, an associate professor of sociology. For the latter, Lakkimsetti was required to change anassigned reading. Instead of the 2000 essay “
The Five Sexes, Revisited ,” by Anne Fausto-Sterling, Lakkimsetti was told to use its precursor, “The Five Sexes,” which Fausto-Sterling published in 1993.
Fausto-Sterling, a professor emerita of biology and gender studies at Brown University ,writes on her own website that while the first essay proposed a “tongue in cheek” five-sex system, “rather than identify a specific number of sexes, in the second paper I wrote ‘sex and gender are best conceptualized as points in a multidimensional space.’” It’s that broader discussion that Lakkimsetti suspects drew concern from administrators.
Administrators had flagged the Fausto-Sterling essay when Lakkimsetti submitted an exception request for the section of “Sociology of Gender” she taught this spring, noting that next time she taught the course, she’d need to write a justification for assigning the“Revisited” essay. Lakkimsetti said she did so but was not told why she’d need to assign the original “Five Sexes” essay instead.”
