as a brittany murphy fan (with Riding in Cars with Boys being one of my favorite films, not that you asked, though maybe it matters a bit), i was probably always going to be at least somewhat inclined to like this album but these are still early-listening impressions, so this is kind of live processing, but there’s a lot going on in DANCE… first that calm, trance-like, escalating bassline, which immediately puts me in“Billie Jean” and “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’,” opening world and then all these little 2000s-pop melodies; tell me if you can hear Rihanna’s “Breakin’ Dishes” all over parts of the album, but especially in the way Slayyy sings “daaaannn-ce” in DANCE vs RiRi’s “a maaaannn”… it’s also genuinely hard to move on from “Cannibalism!” bc it does have a N.E.R.D.-ish thing happening, but also something like the aggressive, pop-rap energy of “B.O.B.” by OutKast… also love the particular 2010s era she’s in bc it reminds me of Sandy Kim’s indie sleaze photography from that era and like watching early grimes interviews
