A Final Resting Place at the Fluessen
In the shelter of a farmer's barn, not far from the banks of the Fluessen, an old badger (Meles meles) found its last refuge. The animal, an adult male, was found weakened in a bed of straw.
The Natural Cycle
Badgers are normally shy, nocturnal inhabitants of their setts. However, when a badger feels its strength declining due to old age or illness, it sometimes seeks a sheltered, dry place to rest. This badger chose the comfort of the straw, sheltering from the elements and the perils of the outside world.
A Dignified End
Although the passing of such a beautiful animal is always a little sad, there is also beauty in the peace he found here. No struggle, but a soft place in the vicinity of human activity that he kept at bay his whole life.
The presence of badgers around lakes like the Fluessen testifies to a healthy living environment with sufficient shelter and food. This old male has undoubtedly roamed the Frisian landscape for many years and now leaves his place to a new generation.
Rest in peace, old inhabitant of the field.
