I was commissioned to write my first long-form book review (!!!) by The Walrus — and then I got awkward. Because how do you write a review of a book you didn’t hate but didn’t quite enjoy reading without feeling like an asshole?
Answer: I wrote about my brother’s depression (lol?)
And it must be said: The Walrus has an amazing editorial team that supports good journalism while also finding space for reflective, off-beat personal essay/book review hybrids, while remaining paywall-free. Give them a digital hug!
