I would hesitate to mention any particular story (too rushed to check titles) but the work of Honeygloom and NJ Fiction, in addition to those mentioned by Shony, have been a great encouragement to me.
Just now also exploring the work of Hanna Delaney and I think I’m a convert.
Beyond that, I’m always referring back to Angie Carter, Borges, Kafka, Poe, DeLillo, Babel and Ballard. Rarely a month goes by when I don’t pick up one or other of them. Right now digging into V.S Naipaul and Amos Tutuola too.
And let’s not forget poets too. Yeats, Auden and Bishop are big influences for me. Weird Shakespeare with magic in, also.
