I’ve used Windows laptops for over a decade and every single one without fail has had battery lifespan issues. What do I mean? My current laptop has a 14900K + 4060 ti and a 90,000 mAH battery. When it was brand new that would last only around 5 hours of browser use only with minimum brightness settings. Now, after just two years of ownership, I get less than 2 hours of browser use at minimum brightness, and if I want anything brighter than that, I can’t even last through a 100 minute lecture. I love that my laptop can run games or other programs without slowing down when plugged in, but that benefit is only used when plugged in. If I wanted to actually use my laptop to its potential during the day, I have to take the unrecoverable aura hit of lugging a massive 240W power brick and plugging into the wall, hearing the fans spin up, and showing the foids of the world I’m a loser nerd.
I have heard really good things about apple silicon lately. 22 hour continuous battery life for light browser use means I only need to charge once every three days. Hell, I could probably live by the 30-80 rule for the first time in my life. An ARM processor means I get the same performance on battery as if I was plugged in. It also means I don’t have any fan noise. Integrated memory means I get to seamlessly switch between a browser-heavy RAM experience to a graphics-heavy DRAM experience without even needing to press a button. Parallels means I get to use all my Windows apps seamlessly, and Gaben’s steamdeck means most new games are being made to natively run on ARM.
There no longer is a price premium to run windows. The RAM crisis means a $400 upcharge to get 32gb of integrated memory on Macbook is literally CHEAPER than the $500 upcharge it would be to buy a 32gb kit of laptop RAM these days. I get more battery life, more performance, more convenience, more peak brightness, and more sex appeal, and it’s all for less price than its windows counterpart? Sign me up!
Oh btw, Apple gives a 10% mil discount (active and prior) and gives you a free CAC reader with your purchase, that’s kind of cool.
