The interest in this post makes me think about the origin of the “Dumb Supper” of English tradition. These meals were eaten in silence to pay respects to spirits. Originally the word “Dumb” just meant mute.
Traditionally if a ghost was suspected to be haunting a home in Appalachia it was served a meal. This way the ghost became a guest and was expected to leave after the meal was over, as was polite.
