I wrote this sermon last year for the First Sunday of Lent. A novel reading of the three temptations in the desert.

“The drama only stands out all the more when we look at what these signs mean together. The Rock, The Temple, The Mountain. The Bread, The Body, The Law. The Word, The Sacrifice, The Kingdom. The Rock is The Bread is The Word. The Temple is The Body is The Sacrifice. (On) the Mountain is the Law is The Kingdom. “This is My Body, Broken for you, do this in remembrance of Me.“ What splendid and simple profundity here in these three trials as if to clarify the tri-partite words of consecration. What is Satan doing? Shooting himself in the foot? Is the great deceiver being used to confess the truth about His Kingdom to Jesus Himself?
