RMS Lusitania was a British ocean liner torpedoed by the German U-boat U-20 on 7 May 1915, during World War I. The attack occurred in the Celtic Sea, near Old Head of Kinsale, Ireland, while the ship was en route from New York City to Liverpool, England. The torpedo strike caused a massive secondary explosion, likely due to coal dust igniting in the ship's bunkers or the detonation of contraband war supplies, including 4.2 million rounds of rifle ammunition and thousands of artillery shell casings. The ship sank in just 18 minutes, resulting in the deaths of 1,197 of the 1,960 people aboard, including 128 American citizens.

The sinking shocked the world and significantly shifted public opinion, especially in the United States, against Germany. Although the U.S. did not enter the war immediately, the incident contributed to the eventual American entry in April 1917, following Germany's resumption of unrestricted submarine warfare.
