Below is my introduction to Plato’s longest dialogue the Laws. I’m aiming at releasing the second in the series on the entire dialogue by Friday afternoon of next week (the 9th, certainly no later than Saturday the 10th)

In the second discussion I go into great detail about what Plato’s Socrates means by saying “Law wishes to be the discovery of what is [i.e., the discovery of the beings (‘ta onta | τὰ ὄντα), from which we get our word ‘ontology’]”

Let that sink in: What we think of today as “ontology,” Plato’s Socrates says issues from a philosophical inquiry into politics, and in particular law. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg of everything that comes tumbling out of the discussion.

I think you’re going to really enjoy it
