For all Cousin Eddy might be lacking, think of what he does have! He’s upbeat. He has a lust for life. He takes the world as it is. He may not be able to provide a lavish Christmas for his kids, but it’s obvious they’ve been cared for in some way— Ruby Sue’s eyes have been fixed, Rocky’s lip fungus is unidentified, which means he’s been to see a doctor, one daughter is in rehab sobering up, the other boy is in the circus. Everyone else in the movie — Clark, Margo, etc. — is judging, but not Eddy. He seems to judge no one. He’s loyal to his family. He loves his wife. He sees value in items other people discard. I expect he’s been through the fire — he mentions getting his metal plate replaced with plastic at the VA, which suggests he’s a veteran. Eddy has learned the comedy of survival. He is my Christmas idol.
