Have you heard of the “Hundred Flowers Campaign”? It took place in the year 1959 during “The Great Leap Forward” when the dictator Mao ruled.

During this campaign, people from all walks of life were asked to express their opinions on Mao’s reign.

After a short period of time Mao turned on these scientists, teachers, politicians and dreamers. The Anti-Rightist movement was created, which tortured and killed those who spoke out.

What did we learn from this piece of history?

  • The government is not on your side

  • Be careful with your words

  • If something seems too good to be true, it often is

  • Death is the end of free speech

What else can we glean from this time period?

  • Those born in the 50’s (Boomers) may not have been aware of this event.

  • You cannot stop a dictator without an overthrow.
