Make money doing the work you believe in

these photos are from 2018 when we were invited to play colbert sort of last minute. i’d made plans with a man to meet up for coffee but instead i flew to ny. never saw that man again.. who knows what could’ve been but im really happy i got to play colbert’s late show once with the band.

recently i went back to sing on the show with tweedy. when stephen and i were saying goodbye, he sort of tripped off the stage steps and fell into my arms, and we twirled around together for what felt like 3 total revolutions, looking into each other’s eyes the whole time. i realized i hadn’t looked at a stranger’s face that deeply in a while. we slowed and he got his balance… he smiles, points with a finger gun, and he goes, “you know, there are no accidents in tv!”

***it’s incredible (derogatory) to see the domino effects of authoritarianism play out in real time, especially across pop culture. stephen colbert educated ppl like me, who grew up watching far more late night tv than news, on important issues— using humor and empathy. he has spoken truth in the face of extreme power and pressure. he did cockblock me that one time though.
