The past few months I keep running across bits of writing (posts, comments, whatever) where somebody uses a word that is just not the right word. It’s not slang, it’s just the wrong word. The “off” word usually starts with the same letter as a plausible word (like maybe somebody says “scantily” when they mean “sparingly”).… Every time this happens it makes me feel like I’m living in some kind of Lathe of Heaven scenario for the English language… I’m the only person who remembers how it used to be…
