Some people don’t like to refer to Orcas as Killer Whales because they think it gives them a bad rep but here’s a bit of a plot twist! The name Orca comes from their scientific name ‘Orcinus orca’ which translates from Latin to ‘belonging to Orcus’.
Orcus, in Etruscan and Roman mythology, is the God of the underworld and broken oaths. And so ‘Orcinus orca’ roughly translates to ‘whale from hell’, which is arguably worse than Killer Whale 😈
