The app for independent voices

Last Autumn Mslexia Magazine asked me to write an article about the impact of AI on writers. The editor called it ‘an existential threat’ - such a juicy topic to get my teeth into.

It was published in the winter edition and I am thrilled that it is now online and available for everyone to read (link below).

"The rapid rise of AI and the proliferation of AI slop has brought us to a crossroads. We no longer need to engage in the uncomfortable, messy and slow process of struggling with our writing. But the difficulty of writing isn’t a productivity problem and AI isn’t the solution. We have a choice in how we use these tools, if indeed we use them at all."

I read lots of research, which was evolving weekly, and along with the hot takes, hype and opinions, I found many wise writers happy to share their experiences. I am so grateful to: Naomi Alderman, Will Storr, Daisy Buchanan, Ros Barber, Julia Bell, Katherine Clements, Elizabeth Blakelock, Charlotte Guillain, agent Anna Power, children’s publisher Emma Drage and mostly to Debbie Taylor at Mslexia for trusting me with a difficult subject.

You can find the full article and additional explainer and how-to boxes in the print magazine and the online version here: mslexia.co.uk/magazine/…
