Things That Once Felt Like Failures That Were Actually Turning Points

I’ve been thinking lately about how many turning points in my life felt like failure at the time:

  1. The end of my first serious relationship. It broke my heart, but it also gave me the freedom to choose my own path and helped me understand what I actually needed in a partner.

  2. Leaving graduate school. I was in the wrong program, but walking away felt like failure. I never would have found my calling if I had stayed.

  3. The internship I didn’t get. It forced a move that felt terrifying at the time, but it’s how I eventually found home.

  4. Sending my teenage son to wilderness therapy. One of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made as a parent. And unequivocally the best.

  5. Realizing I needed help. Admitting I was in an anorexia relapse as an adult filled me with shame, but finding the right support changed the course of my life.

  6. Admitting I didn’t know what I was doing. This has happened more times than I can count, in more settings than I can name. Each time felt like failure. Each time opened the door to learning.

  7. Letting go of relationships that no longer felt reciprocal. Each time, it made space for more honest, aligned connections.

Life is strange that way.

The moments that feel like the end of the story are often the beginning of a better one.
