Love this. The art of memoiring. Anthropology at it’s most casual state. Political in it’s most subtle ways. Pre-oil, pre-state articulations of travel in the Arab States of the Gulf, albeit, was poetic. Poetry, unlike memoirs, offered a medium for transferring travel documentation, safe-keeped in oral articulations. Only a few poetry-memoirs have been transcribed by scholars — although not my area of focus, this is super fruitful for aspiring academics. On the other hand, for aspirers of documenting their own travels in the modern day, try creating a travel memoir, in your notes app, or pocket journal in freely writing or poetry even. Travel is a medium through which a self evolves, enjoys, contests, and creates, almost always demanding an expansion of the repertoire of people, places, and objects you already know of, or have encountered.
