But envy can be a helpful emotion in smaller doses than what Salieri takes.
In The Artist’s Way, Julia Cameron recommends making a map of people in your life that you envy or even hate.
Then unwind your reasons. Does this person get paid more than you, get published by bigger outlets, have more critical acclaim?
Once you’ve acknowledged what specifically is driving you crazy about them, you can figure out what it would take to close the gap.
And then you can do something about it.
Assuming what’s driving you crazy isn’t that they’re a one of the greatest composers of all time.
