Make money doing the work you believe in

This level of brand exposure would have taken multiple lifetimes inside a single company. Unless you work in advertising, the traditional path probably doesn't hand you this.

I've been studying affiliate marketing and UGC very closely for the last year and a half. Some of the best brand education I've gotten in that time hasn't come from a course or a book — it's come from reading affiliate briefs and being in the weeds creating content and generating sales. Plus watching my peers navigate a really competitive landscape.

Most brands I work with give me a window into how they think about their voice, their audience, their positioning — the foundational work most founders never get to see from the inside. Skincare brands have different non-negotiables than supplement brands. Pet brands sound nothing like beauty brands. Some briefs are tight and clear. Others read like the brand hasn't actually figured itself out yet. Some brands give you creative freedom (my fave).

The standard advice is to niche down. If I had followed it, I'd have stayed in the pet space. And I get it — the top 1% of affiliate creators are deeply niched. That's where the income is. But I was after something else: range. The breadth has been its own education. The brands that find your work and come back to it because of how you build your videos — that's its own kind of long game.

I've also met incredible people doing this work. Affiliate friends who are quietly making serious income and who treat the craft like the real thing it is. That has been one of the unexpected gifts.

A few of the brands I've worked with across categories:

Beauty & skincare: Anastasia · Biore · Fenty Beauty · Glow Recipe · Medicube · POV Beauty · Salt & Stone · Skinfix · Wonderskin

Personal care & hair: Blissy · Kenra · Kitsch · MySmile · Native

Wellness, fitness & supplements: Bloom Nutrition · Brain MD · GNC · Guru · Halara · Hiyo · Hydrojug · Loop Earplugs · Neuro Gum · Vital Proteins

Pet: Basepaws · Dog Friendly Co · Earth Rated · Freezbone · Native Pet · Pet Honesty · Spark Paws · Woof Pet · Zesty Paws

Home & sustainability: Blueland · Earth Breeze

Outdoor & travel: BagSmart · Kast King

In the hopper: Trip (new functional drinks from Calm) · Dot (virtual business cards)

Product, service, open role, personal brand — the surface changes, the foundation doesn't.

This is part of how I think about brand. More on that at benfordtalentalchemy.com.
