Inspired by John Wesley, Arthur Guinness came up with his famous dark stout as an alternative to the cheap spirits which were debilitating the Irish working class during the 18th-century.
Being a relatively thick, low-alcohol brew, patrons would be “full” after a glass or two and be able to see straight enough to work the next day.
Eventually, Guinness was able to provide schooling, above-average wages, pensions, healthcare, and meals for his employees, who became fiercely loyal to the company.
His motto was “My hope is in God.”
Proactive, ameliatory, localized, practical … now THAT’S a salty Christian buisnessman.
May God raise up more like him in our day.
