Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Needs to be Replaced with Merit, Excellence, and Intelligence. By Fred Birnbaum (09/04/24)

Birnbaum explains:

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), as applied, means just the opposite of the simple definitions of these words. It is a clever way to attack the very notion of meritocracy and excellence at its core. Who gets to define what is diverse, equitable, and inclusive? And what do those have to do with personal, professional, or academic achievement? Or, as Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has said, “There’s a big difference between equality and equity. Equitable treatment means we all end up at the same place.”

Key points:

  • DEI must be removed from Idaho’s public institutions. The fight has been ongoing for several years.

  • DEI proponents change terminology to get around the arguments without actually changing the underlying meaning.

  • Attacking the nomenclature is insufficient.

  • Idaho’s DEI opponents have not found the right tools to deploy and some members of the establishment are heavily invested in this ideology.

  • Idaho’s Legislature has attempted but mostly failed to rein in DEI and other related ideologies (several examples given).

  • DEI infrastructure and staff in Idaho’s universities are now bigger than ever.

Solutions:

The legislature must defund universities that promote DEI until they stop. Pass Senate Bill 1357 which was NOT heard during the 2024 legislative session. This bill included:

  • Definitions and examples of the current university DEI infrastructure;

  • Prohibits any funding for DEI bureaucracies and training programs;

  • Prohibits political loyalty tests.
