Moon explains that when movements don’t have the best ideas and people to win the hearts and minds of others, they simply change the rules.
Prop 1’s dual objectives to implement Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) and Top-Four/Jungle Primaries will change the rules so that the majority of Idahoans — who are conservative and registered Republicans — cannot win at the ballot box.
[ED NOTE: Wherever such schemes have been implemented, voters end up with regret and less than stellar politicians running the government.]
What does Prop 1 (aka “Idaho Open Primaries Act” ballot initiative) do?
First, Prop 1 implements a “jungle primary,” which would dilute each party's ability to choose its own best candidates by placing Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, independents, and everyone else all on the same ballot. Thus, voters NOT affiliated with your Party get to choose whether your Party is invited to the party at all.
Second — and perhaps most important and most hidden from voters — Prop 1 changes our general election to Ranked Choice Voting, a complicated and confusing system that is hard to understand, requires expensive (not currently approved in Idaho) internet-connected computers to count, and is nearly impossible to audit. In other words, cheating is MORE likely during the counting process and LESS likely to be detected afterwards.
Contrary to making elections more fair and open to more people, Prop 1 would decrease both voter participation and trust in our election systems.
