Nowhere To Hyde — Legislative Pay & Public Service (11/12/24, video 07:43 includes transcript)
Brian Hyde discusses implications of the recently proposed legislator pay raise and what it really means to be a public servant. Worth a listen!
Hyde arguments:
Keep the legislature part-time to keep it lean and responsive to taxpaying citizens.
Current part-time pay is about average for part-time legislators.
Do not provide pay incentives that encourage legislature to go full time.
Public service as part-time legislators should involve some sacrifice of their time and effort, regardless of pay and benefits.
Pay should increase with cost of living but large increases are unwarranted, expensive, unsustainable, and do not support taxpayer interests.
Full-time legislatures with bigger pay in New York and California have created dystopian conditions in their states. Do we want that in Idaho?
