Nowhere To Hyde — Setting Idaho's Education Priorities (11/21/24, video 12:44 includes transcript)

Hyde covers several education-related topics in this episode:

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The Idaho State Board of Education will be considering a resolution to eliminate Diversity and Equity offices from universities, stating that institutions shall ensure that no central office policy procedure or initiative is dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The resolution could scrap diversity offices from Boise State, University University of Idaho, Idaho State University, and Lewis Clark State College. (Diversity, equity, and inclusion offices take many forms and use misleading or innocuous sounding names; all should be eliminated.)

When asked “what will we replace this with?” Hyde replies:

This question reminds me of what Ron Paul said back when someone asked “Well if you get rid of the IRS, what are you going to replace it with?” His answer was “I don't know. When you take out a tumor, what do you replace it with?”

The board wants to ensure that all students succeed regard regardless of personal identity characteristics and that no college employee should be required to state their gender pronouns in any communication. This is quite a turnaround!

NOTE: Idaho Governor Brad Little already signed a bill banning higher education institutions from including diversity statements in their hiring processes or requiring people to give their pronouns.

How Idaho Can Be at the Forefront of an Educational Renaissance

This segment discusses Samuel Lair’s recent article, which we highly recommend. See the note or article linked below for details:

Hyde describes how classical education can combat the indoctrination imposed by the education establishment. Classical education focuses on developing the whole person by cultivating intellectual and moral virtue and including a content-rich course of study rooted in the Western Civilization — from geometric proofs of Euclid to the tragedies of Shakespeare.

This is an easy one to implement: Idaho simply must stop injecting millions in public funds to whatever careers are arbitrarily deemed to be in demand and have the government step aside:

  • Allow the money to follow the student.

  • Let the parents decide whether want their children to identify Idaho's role in the global economy or develop good moral character and civic virtue.

Classical education can create people who are capable of handling freedom, solving their own problems, and thinking through and identifying the correct underlying principles.

Ban Mask Mandates in Idaho

This segment isn’t strictly about education, but kids were required to mask up in many schools. Hyde asks that you sign the Citizens Alliance of Idaho petition to ban mask mandates in Idaho:

The petition asks the legislature to prevent the State of Idaho, a political subdivision, or any officer of the state from mandating the usage of a face mask, face shield, or other face covering for preventing or slowing the spread of a disease.
