Southwest Airlines Agrees to End DEI Employment Practices in Response to Lawsuit. By By Matt McGregor (12/04/24)

Excellent news: Southwest Airlines dropped its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) requirements.

America First Legal (AFL) alleged that Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, and American Airlines are in breach of federal contract. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) confirmed that Southwest Airlines “acknowledged and agreed to end its illegal race and sex-based discrimination in all hiring and promotional processes, including all unlawful DEI quotas, benchmarks, or preferences.”

Executive Order 11246, which Southwest and (likely) other airlines violated:

Prohibits federal contractors and federally‐assisted construction contractors and subcontractors, who do over $10,000 in Government business in one year from discriminating in employment decisions on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or national origin.

As of 12/05/24, we don’t know what United Airlines and American Airlines intend to do.
