Idaho Legislature: Ask Legislators to VOTE NO on H0061 - Food tax credit (posted 02/03/25, revised 02/15/25)

_____________
H0061 would increase the grocery tax credit from $120 per person or $140 for individuals 65 and older to $155 for ALL individuals, starting in FY 2026.
H0061 would allow Idaho income tax filers to take the $155 tax credit per person, or to receive a full refund of all taxes paid on groceries up to $250 per person by itemizing their grocery expenses on their annual income tax returns.
Citizens who want the maximum available credit must keep paperwork, track their expenditures, and then report them while completing annual income taxes.
Under H0061, Idahoans must file their taxes before they can receive the credit, whether they itemize grocery tax expenses or not.
Let’s just REPEAL the grocery tax at the point of sale so Idahoans can feel less pain when they pay at the register. The downside of this approach is that government chooses “what is food.”
Notes:
Many people disagree with our stance on H0061 (and other things as well 🤣). H0061 definitely is better than no additional tax credit, but we can do better.
Senators Glenneda Zuiderveld and Josh Kohl and Representatives David Leavitt and Lucas Cayler have a bill to repeal the grocery tax at the point of sale. The House Revenue & Taxation Committee Chair should give this worthy bill a hearing.
