Idaho Legislature: Ask Legislators to VOTE NO on S1094 - Supplemental school levies (posted 02/14/25)

_____________
S1094 increases the maximum duration of levies from two to up to six years. It also removes the school districts' option for a perpetual levy for levies approved before January 1, 2025.
The education system likes this bill because it provides school districts with more flexibility in funding and long-term financial planning. But it significantly reduces voter oversight of local tax increases.
Six years is too long for school levies. While it’s a pain for voters and schools to be faced with new levies every two years, a six-year levy term greatly weakens the ability of a local community to influence school district policy and spending.
Removing the perpetual levy option for levies approved before January 1, 2025 is not a strong countermeasure to school district complacency, because voters are usually very reluctant to approve perpetual levies anyway.
Your NO vote would be greatly appreciated by taxpayers who want to maintain control over their local schools by exercising their power of the purse.
