I have told you stories about this guy. In our Chinese class of three, I was in third place. He was number one.
Chinese was his third language and he had a talent for learning language. As a child, his parents were Christian missionaries in Jordan, and his Arabic was native fluent. He was a blonde kid among the Palestinians.
We went through Typhoon Rita together, sustained winds of 170 mph with gusts to 210 mph, waves of 80 feet.
There were three of us. The third was assigned to a different ship. Bill and I were on a destroyer but we seldom saw each other. Both Chinese and Americans wanted us immersed. That gave my Chinese classmates more time to learn the inter-cultural stuff…and vice versa.
I am in a nostalgic mood. I don’t owe him any money so I should look him up.
