The app for independent voices

When I was on Taiwan in the 1970s…

During the Vietnam War, Taiwan and Manila were places for R&R from the combat zone in Vietnam. The bars on Chung Shan N Road were rated R. I heard Manila got a triple X with live on-stage sex shows. Taiwan was pretty tame, bar girls drinking with customers.

After the Vietnam War, there were thousands of Amer-Asian children in both Taiwan and Vietnam.

I was told these mixed race children were scorned.

But

Starting in the 80s, then exploding into the 1990s, mixed race children on Taiwan were discovered to be beautiful…they became movie stars or models.

Whenever I watch a Maggie Q movie (Maggie Quigley is ½ Vietnamese and ½ European) I think of the ugly ducklings left by Americans as we pulled out of Taiwan. They became famous for their beauty.
