Who will you be in the Third Republic of the United States? In the way that the Civil War ended the First Republic of United States, one that was only devoted to life, liberty, and happiness of wealthy, white males, the recent SCOTUS decision effectively neutered the 14th Amendment and ended the Second Republic of the United States, a republic that was intended to fulfill the promise of equality, life, liberty, and happiness for all of us. We are now at a crossroads, with the broken covenant (All... Created Equal and E Pluribus Unum) and contract (Constitution & 14th Amendment) of the Second Republic in tatters at our feet. Of course, this didn't happen all at once, but slowly and deliberately. About 90% of everything the SCOTUS has done since Citizens United has been to roll back civil rights for women, people of color and poor folks. And now the 1% has won, to the tune of $79T (RAND, 2025); our incomes are half of what they would be had the 1% not rolled back the promise of equality that was realized during the middle of the last century (1945-75). Project 2025 is the current proposed new contract of the Third Republic. If you think, this is a good thing, I ask you to show me where in our founding documents or the sacred texts of your religion does it justify exploiting all of humanity for the benefit of one tiny group (wealthy folks). If you know in your bones, this isn't good, I encourage you to look yourself in the mirror and accept this loss. Honestly own that we've lost this battle, this Second Republic. From here, the real work begins. From here, we can adopt the intellectual posture of the "post mortem", examining the promise of the second republic (equality), it's wins and losses, and especially the necessity of all three legs of the democratic farmers stool (idea, political-economy, and culture / spirituality). I invite you to drop everything you were planning to do in June and join us on the road for the National Pilgrimage, and register for the National Assembly, to develop a people's moral vision, a new covenant for the Third Republic.
