We’ll never be 100% “ready” for the Village. My grandparents and great grandparents weren’t ready for the Depression, yet the rose to meet the moment. They lived simply, grew food, shared it, and enjoyed it.

I also take issue with the idea that we’re too individualist or capitalist to tend to the Village. We’re matriarchal in origin and nature. Our households, even today, even in the most wounded cultures and extractive economics of NYC and Phoenix, we are communist (to each according to their needs, and from each according to their means). It’s only when we step outside that we regress to the individualist OS. It’s only when we’re seduced by consumerist norms that we make decisions to exploit people and planet for surpluses to be enjoyed in our commune.

On the West Coast, there are people who have been doing inner work and relational work for decades. There are people that have constructed, ran, and deconstructed an entire city (Black Rock) with all the requisite sectors (urban planning, social norms, public utilities, public safety, healthcare, childcare, education, administration, etc.) for decades.

And now that we have books like “The Dawn of Everything”, “Before War”, and “Always Coming Home”, we have blueprints for the Village.

We’re as ready as we’ll ever be for the Village.
