When I started the farm, I thought all the plastic wasn’t that big of a deal. Everyone else grew under plastic mulch, in plastic seed trays, with lots of plastic-packaged soils, fertilizers and fungicides. But the more I learned about the function and process of the soil life, the more I realized that maybe—just maybe, there was a better way? A CHEAPER way, a way that didn’t impact the planet the way things do once big business steps in?

A return to the way things used to be done. Removing the plastics. Studying the soil respiration. Learning about how, when we listen to the earth, she shows us the way —how the soil life can mineralize the organic matter in the soil into nutrients, how the plants, when left alone, formulate a complex series of signals to the soil to attract what they need, when they need it? Yes, it is possible.
