This is not a fear. This is a certainty. When you think about it “rules of engagement” are simply a commitment to moral behaviour. Pete Hegseth’s is asking for a lifetime “Get out of jail free” card. But life isn’t like that. We can’t life’s responsibilities. No person, and no country, is above the law. Malignant narcissism can take over the minds of individuals and groups, as can cults and hatred. But we have a responsibility as individuals and countries to take on this complete departure from law, ethics, humanity and decency. We are well past satire.
