Today we have “Moving On” by Diane Cook, the 4th selection in The Best American Short Stories 2015. Originally published in Tin House.
Your husband dies. You feel lucky to be able to tend your husband’s burial and settle his affairs before the Placement Team takes you and your two bags of essentials, to a shelter where you’ll take Moving On seminars and wait for a man to select you as his new wife. Your dowry will come from the proceeds of the sale of you and your husband’s house.
Ah, dystopia—surely this is something that could never happen.
