I saw 1980 as the main turning point where the tear-it-all-down brigade got traction. I can’t explain how I recognized it at the time even though I was so young and naive, but it looked crystal clear.

It sounds like we left at similar times for different reasons. My departure was in late 2006. Health insurers had barred me from getting a new policy at any price and the one I had was going up by as much as 40% per increase, twice a year. But I got to go to my life-partner, my wife, instead of only going from the USA. That matters a lot.
