Gotta make two addenda since I wrote this last year:
First, I think it’s time to acknowledge a new Concerned Mom subtype: the boho MAHA mama. She is very concerned, but the vibe is crunchier and the focus far more things that interact with the body: food and macros, sunscreen and other cosmetics, vaccines and other medications. The clothing style is not wildly different from other concerned moms, but where you saw a long, heavy jean skirt on the homeschool mom of the past, here the skirt might be more flowy and tiered, perhaps linen, or maybe wide-legged pants instead, or just mom jeans or the Whole Foods end of athleisure. She would never buy the infamous raw milkmaid dress (too expensive, also too sexy) but liked it.
And second, Erika Kirk has emerged as another skilled aesthetic straddler. The blonde waves are very Fox News, but the suits are not: The cut is Iron Lady, while the fabric and finishes are the glitzy end of Barstool. Some on the left make fun of her clothes, but I suspect they’re quite deliberate and find it plausible that she’ll go into politics proper—as was fairly common for the widows of lawmakers in the last century—potentially reaching Congress or even (seriously!) the White House.
