When society pushes people to do things that are good, then that's a good thing! We should be a society where having read Anna Karenina is a mark of distinction, and it's a testament to the health of bourgeois society that there is such a strong cachet to being cultured. It's actually kind of sick and disgusting when literary people—whose entire value is built upon a reverence for culture—start to deny or twist or turn upon peoples' natural reverence for what is old and distinguished.
