A rant on Austrias atm protection.
Week after week we read from blown up ATMs🏧 in Austria🇦🇹.
Now Austria in response to the school shootings aswell as a previous terrorist stabbing attack few month prior wants to start surveillance on the Messenging apps of the citizens.
In February 2025 that discussions surfaced up the first time this year:
We all know where that might lead in the worst case “if you have nothing to hide you got nothing to worry” is quoted often but as we know since 9/11 terror occured in NYC every single monitoring on citizens has historically increased.
So one notice beforehand: Once such monitoring and spying is introduced by a government (in the “liberal west”) it simply does not go away. It stays for eternity.
However: What puzzles me even more than privacy concerns is the questions if Austrias federal ministry of interior (BMI) is even competent enough for such an big step to surveillance 2.0.
This is something I came up with after short research and it startled me most to find out that the issue is not one of man power:
Spoiler alert : By writing these facts that are not even secrets I risk to get on the list for being spied on likely.

32618 police officers
So according to the official website of the ministry of interior there are 32618 employees working in the police.
How many atms are there in Austria :
“Zum Ende des Jahres 2023 belief sich die Anzahl der Bankautomaten in Österreich auf etwa 13.456.”
13.456.
So theorerically up to 2 police officers could guard one single ATM in Austria.
Well thworetically.
You know what was achived so far?
One of the bank robbers that tend to blow up ATMs got shot in the arse.
But the anarchy continues…

There is now a “SOKO Bankomat”. Lets hope they have the freedom to act more independent from the head of BMI Mr. Karner(ÖVP).
