Honest question:
Are we, as a writing community, in a place where we can have a discussion around AI? Before I go on, allow me to make something abundantly clear:
I have never, nor will I ever, use AI in any part of my creative process.
That is my approach, but I do not expect everyone else to adhere to it. Even so, I’m starting to see a schism forming in the writing community between those who are willing to leverage AI as a tool, and those who are staunchly against it.
Part of me thinks that, until it becomes less of an existential threat to creativity, that meaningful discussion will be out of reach. Even so, I can’t just sit by and watch the community fracture either.
Now, to be clear, no one should be forced to use AI if they don’t want to, and I think anything that’s entirely written with AI should be outside this discussion as well.
I’m talking about the middle-ground here. The part where it gets blurry. Can we have a meaningful discussion there? Even if it’s just to simply understand where both sides are coming from?
Like I said, it’s not for me, but this community is, and I don’t want us to become enemies over how we choose to create our stories. I realize it’s more nuanced than that, but I’m curious what people think.
Depending on how this goes, I may do a full article to encourage further discussion, but if this becomes a war in the comments, I’ll be deleting this note.
I’m not here to make the problem worse.
