History, Myth and Memory
The contemporary philosopher Edward Butler has spent decades reconstructing it, drawing on Proclus. For Proclus, the Gods occupy what he called the huperousios, the supra-essential domain: “a multiplicity of absolute individuals with no totalizing principle over them.” The Gods are not instances of a category called divinity. There is no genus of which Odin and Zeus and Isis are species. Each god is what Proclus called a henad — a unique unity, prior to being itself.
