Nearly 70% of Americans are now considered obese under a new definition.
Using the old, BMI-only criteria, ~43% of Americans are considered obese. But with a new definition that combines BMI + elevated waist-to-hip and waist-to-height ratio (anthropometric obesity), 68.6% have obesity, with 80% of adults >70 years old categorized as obese.
High BMI + anthropometric obesity was also associated with a 230% greater risk of organ dysfunction.
