I would challenge that “evolutionism” is at odds with the Christian God. Evolutionism is not an inherently “materialistic” ontology. It's just the belief that something (e.g. God, to your point) is driving the processes of evolution in the natural world. What part of the Christian God is at odds with that?

In other words, God is evolution. Or, more simply, God is Reason or Rationality.

The Christian God only starts to fall apart when you start wishing historical metaphor into convenient historical fact, and then convenient historical fact into divine command.

It's the same mistake the Greeks made with their oracles and the monarchists made with their kings. And it will be the undoing of Christianity.
