đź”´Severe Storms Sweep Across Ontario Tonight: Tornado Warnings Issued, Widespread Damage Reportedđź”´

By Annie Koshy

A line of severe thunderstorms swept across Ontario this evening, May 19, prompting Environment Canada to issue tornado warnings for London, Brantford and surrounding areas before extending eastward through cottage country. The warnings have since been lifted across southwestern Ontario but thunderstorm warnings remained in effect as of 8:20 p.m. for areas east of Hamilton and through the Niagara Region, with damaging gusts and up to quarter-sized hail still possible.

Whether a tornado actually touched down remains unconfirmed at the time of writing. What is confirmed is the damage left behind. The City of London received at least 50 reports of downed trees, with the most significant impact concentrated in the city’s east end. London Fire Department responded to multiple calls about downed trees and downed power lines. On Burnside Drive, a falling tree pulled a power line onto a parked vehicle. Residents described the moment the storm hit as a sudden wall of white with fences bending before the trees began to fall. A funnel cloud was reported by a resident in London’s Westmount area, captured on video, though Environment Canada has not yet confirmed a touchdown.

Hamilton experienced downed trees and damaging gusts as the system moved through. The storm then continued tracking eastward, with tornado warnings also issued for communities including Woodstock and Brantford-Brant County before being lifted. Cottage country was included in subsequent severe weather alerts as the system pushed northeast across the province.

Environment Canada meteorologist Alyssa Young said the conditions developed after two days of unusually warm temperatures collided with an advancing cold front. The front provided the trigger for rotating winds and gusts in excess of 90 kilometres per hour, with the potential for that spinning rotational wind that tornado warnings require. Temperatures are expected to drop sharply on Wednesday as the cold front clears the region, knocking daytime highs down to the low double digits or even single digits in some areas.

No injuries have been confirmed at the time of writing. Cleanup in London alone is expected to take weeks. City crews are responding to urgent situations on a priority basis, with initial focus on clearing blocked roads and addressing trees that have fallen on homes, structures or vehicles. This is a developing story and further updates will follow as more information becomes available.
