last night in an ornate venue in Brooklyn, i had the honour of listening LUX in it’s entirety and hear Rosalia share a few words on her new album. our phones were taken away but, in the end, it was vital to the experience so we could focus on the music. Rosalia explained that she sings in 13 different languages on her album because she’s referencing saints from around the world — using their stories. as the album played, translated lyrics were projected onto a draped white curtain that cloaked half the room. we sat on church pews. Rosalia raps in Mandarin, speaks to God in Italian, chants in Arabic, sings in Hebrew. the experience was nothing short of epic, the songs hymn-like in the way they serve as affirmations but also the narrative progression. some felt like lore or scripture. it’s exciting to live in a time where a pop star is making music that challenges the listener to sit down and study their work rather than making passive, playlistable slop for the algorithm. LUX forces the listener to not only stop, but also look up 📿🙏🏿 nov 7th can’t come sooner. thank you rosalia <3
