Whenever I hang out in elite entrepreneurial scenes, I find it pretty damn hard to take seriously all the language of 'risk taking'

The average entrepreneur faces mild shame and maybe bankruptcy proceedings if their venture doesn’t work out, but even then they tend to maintain strong networks, saved money and cultural clout

No, the greatest risk-takers in our society aren’t the tech bros on the cover of Wired Magazine, or the person with a Forbes profile. Rather, they are completely unknown. Photographers do not take snapshots of them, unless it’s by mistake, like a doorman who braved a leaky boat to get to a country to earn remittances for his family, and who now appears as an out-of-focus background extra in a conference photo

A person who takes really hardcore risk might face starvation, destitution or deportation if their gamble doesn’t work. Someone like Elon, on the other hand, has rolled the dice many times, but the consequences of him getting it wrong never lead to him being thrown into a prison, or being drowned in the ocean, or having no food for the night. Elon is tame compared to all the invisibles that do his laundry, drive his Ubers and deliver his meals
