False consciousness arguments are no longer just for the left! Modern social conservatism is basically “feminists and hippies indoctrinated everyone against their self-interest”. There is a whole influencer ecosystem based around the idea that women or whatever have been brainwashed by “culture” to act against what would actually be good for them (see Louise Perry and her tribe). It occurs to neither the left nor the right false consciousness mongers that people make decisions in a tradeoff environment and they have multiple and layered self-interests they have to balance in a choice environment. People actually are pretty smart about their self-interests and if it seems someone is acting against it, instead of blaming patriarchy, capitalist, feminist, or hippie Marxist brainwashing, one should just consider maybe its hard to understand their self-interests as well as they do.
