I see two possible readings:

One: the PhD is just a delivery mechanism. You can assemble the substance yourself.

Two: skip the canon, the methodology, the peer review. Just go think. But what you produce without those things may not actually be literary criticism or philosophy or economic analysis. It may be something else. And how would you know?
