Trump is going to die soon, so in a very real sense he doesn’t matter any more. But in an equally real sense, the US doesn’t matter as much as it used to. My country has proven to be an unreliable partner, for reasons that go much deeper than Trump. And yet I feel hopeful about the future, thanks to people like Mark Carney and Ursula von der Leyen. If the US ultimately has to assume a subordinate role in the Western Alliance, so be it.
